Mr.Domino 2010-03-09T04:37:21Z 2010-03-10T05:24:26Z
Suppose you are a incoming freshman on a large campus. August/September rolls around, and you have really have only talked to a few people attending that college, be that your RA, roommate, etc.

What are some good ways to make friends as a freshman, keeping in mind that not everyone is the hyper-socialite our society seems to breed. Try to nominate your best choice for activity/group/hobby/etc. that will win friends and help you break the ice of a new social life.

Thanks to all answers!
http://discusscampus.com/questions/903/how-to-be-that-guy-in-class How to be "that guy" in class Tessa 2010-03-09T08:40:02Z 2010-03-10T00:33:58Z
You know, the guy (or girl) in class that everyone wants to throw stuff at. While my last question was about being the nice classmate, this question asks, what qualities do your most annoying classmates have?

What tips do you have for people who want to be universally hated in class?

EDIT: This by no means that being "that guy" that everyone hates has anything to do with... That Guy who everyone likes. Yeah.
http://discusscampus.com/questions/895/how-to-be-everyones-favorite-classmate How to be everyone's favorite classmate Tessa 2010-03-08T22:35:02Z 2010-03-09T22:44:10Z
I like being nice. That's right, I admit it. It's awesome to do something genuinely nice for someone else and see them appreciate it.

On a more selfish note, being nice has got to be one of the best subtle networking tactics ever. Think about it, if you're an employer, do you go for the guy with the flashy business card or the one with the dull card but also helped you up after you fell over (assuming they didn't push you over)?

You can easily network with your fellow classmates by being nice. (I even got free Jason Mraz tickets from networking in class once. True story!) Are there any special ways you can be the nice guy in class? Anything you've actually tried?
http://discusscampus.com/questions/877/what-are-the-alternatives-of-p2p-sharing-on-campus What are the alternatives of P2P sharing on-campus? Mr.Domino 2010-03-05T04:33:42Z 2010-03-09T21:59:26Z
P2p, or Peer-to-peer, sharing is a big chunk of the internet cookie.

Of course, Colleges get brownie points for standing up against pirating, or at least enacting a policy.

The school I am attending in the fall has the official policy of

Because of the popularity of Napster, Kazaa, and other file-sharing programs, we have implemented a bandwidth management tool that allows us to prioritize down the types of traffic that can be identified as non-academic. Web browsing and normal file downloads all have equal priority on our Internet connection; however, file-sharing programs are restricted so that they can only use a certain portion of our total connection bandwidth. This effectively allows file sharing, but makes it very slow, since many users are trying to use a smaller connection. We were forced to make a decision about file sharing when it became apparent that these programs could completely saturate our internet lines and make the connection unusable for more legitimate academic purposes. Our policy allows us to identify types of Internet traffic that are seldom used for academic purposes and restrict them so that the remainder of our Internet traffic can flow at a reasonable rate.

...and I have heard much worse than this. It makes sense though. I'd prefer lack of P2P to a slow, zombie-like internet, if forced to make the choice.

I do enjoy getting things free, though.

So what do I do? I certainly won't have the funds to support buying 1.29$ songs all the time (even though I probably never will), I detest buying or renting movies, much less go to see them, and games are ridiculously overpriced, too.

I could set up a FTP server off school grounds, but that's logistically challenging, and I don't know if it will work. The most likely program for it would be DC++.

I could leech off friends, but to what end?

I could break down and pay for everything (fat chance).

What are your solutions to entertainment? I know about grooveshark/pandora/youtube downloader/hulu/etc., and I have an iPod to fill.

Creative solutions will definitely be my favorite. Thanks!

Since my question didn't come through clear enough: If I am not a super-heavy user of pirating software, but I don't really want to pay for everything I listen to to/watch/play (on occasion), what are my alternatives that will not be strictly against the bandwidth traffic code [above] of my school?
http://discusscampus.com/questions/837/how-do-you-guys-use-twitter How do you guys use Twitter? Shep 2010-02-28T17:35:26Z 2010-03-08T20:27:20Z
I have a Twitter, use it every once in awhile. I was wondering if any of you use it in some cool/different ways being college students. When I was trying to encourage friends to sign up last year, I told them we should all sign up and subscribe to each others tweets as text messages. I thought that one of us could tweet something like "Heading to Whataburger, anybody want to join?" and everybody else would receive it immediately and be able to respond. It seemed like the perfect way to organize college students (something that I have found to be nearly impossible). It never really panned out this way, and Twitter for me ultimately felt lacking as a result. Have any of you ever achieved this kind of community on Twitter, or do you use it some other creative, college-specific way?

P.S. - If you're interested, my username is @shep979. I don't tweet very much right now, but maybe I'll get back into it.
http://discusscampus.com/questions/885/how-can-you-get-a-car-in-college How can you get a car in college? Shep 2010-03-06T21:33:52Z 2010-03-08T10:15:27Z
I'm a big fan of Evernote, and was curious to see how you all use it. I take all my class notes in the program, and occasionally scan in a class handout or two. Do any of you go all the way and put every note and every handout in there? If you take handwritten notes, do you take the time to scan them in? Has it made you more efficient/organized?

I'm writing an article for my magazine writing class, and Evernote is a big section in there. If I could use some of your answers as quotes that would be terrific.
http://discusscampus.com/questions/791/what-websites-are-great-for-students-overall-and-specific What websites are great for students (Overall and Specific)? Mr.Domino 2010-02-17T04:18:59Z 2010-03-05T00:01:27Z
I hope I can help anyone else in this situation,

Basically I'm going to college next year for the first time, and I own a desktop computer, i.e., the Dell XPS 720. Let's just say it's about the same area of a mini-fridge, and twice as heavy. It's aptly named "Bubba", and plays just about anything.

Anyways, I hope to take this bad boy to college next year, but I also am getting a laptop for in class notes. Since I got a really healthy college tuition break, I hope to get a really nice one, i.e., the 15" Alienware M15x.

Without going much further, should I bring both? The Alienware easily outgames the XPS, so I can't claim I would use it for that. I can think that I would use Bubba's monitor as a healthy 22" addition to my laptop, or even run both using the Win2VNC software, or even set up Bubba with LinuxMCE and totally geek out my dormroom.

As I have never been to college, I totally don't know what the right and wrongs are here,

Any help?

THANKS!
http://discusscampus.com/questions/865/what-are-some-simple-super-healthy-meal-ideas What are Some Simple Super-Healthy Meal Ideas?
