Hi, I have A's in all my other classes but my art appreciation course (Music Appreciation 103) is kicking my ass. I just got an F on my last test and so far I am skating on a C in that class. This is the only class that I am really studying for, I spend 2 hours on each chapter in the textbook and take meticulous notes on his lectures. As far as I know I am probably the only one struggling in the class. The guy sitting next got a 94 on the test I failed on and he literally told that he did not read any of the material until the night before the test.

What are some study tips anyone can tell me. Right now this class is bugging the hell out of my because I am still struggling with the concept that my 4.0 is being threatened by an Art Appreciate Course.

Here's a great guide by Cal Newport on constructing a study guide for a test such as yours: http://calnewport.com/blog/?p=86

Methods include constructing a study plan, taking notes using the question-evidence-conclusion method and testing yourself with the quiz and recall method. This approach works very well for non-technical classes such as music.

What do you actually do, when you "spend two hours on one textbook chapter"?

I like SQ3R - Survey, Question, Read, Recite/Write, Review.

Are two good references about SQ3R.

A lot of the time these classes are more simple than you think, and if you put too much into it you might miss the point completely and not do well. If this class is a general requirement filler with a professor that would rather be off conducting or writing music, you should just do your best to get to the point. Know the material, and give the best direct answer when questioned.

Of course this doesn't work for all types of classes, but I aced both of my music requirement classes!
