I often show up at parties when I finish work. This means everyone else is way more drunk than me and it's difficult to catch up to their level! What is the best way to get drunk quick (thats quite safe?)

Don't have an empty stomach - have something to eat, then do a few shots. Don't show off, and don't do them all at once, have maybe 2 to 4 (depending on your intake and tolerance) or a 40% liquor. Once you're done with the few shots, start drinking beer - do NOT go back to shots. The trick is to get your alcohol level up right at the start with something that gets you drunk quickly, then switch to something that will keep you there (but will be harder to get really drunk off of, like beer or a mixed drink) for the whole night. Don't do shots towards the end, do them at the start. That's the best way I've found to catch up.

Yeah, you could take a bunch of shots at once, but that's a little unpleasant.

Maybe try getting your body to process a normal amount of alcohol faster? Warm drinks get absorbed faster, same with carbonated ones. Or, plan to have an empty stomach.

I would also state that this is a potentially bad idea, but nonetheless many college students are in this position at one time or another.

Shots (or strong mixed drinks) are a quicker method as opposed to beer purely because you will run into a volume problem significantly faster with beer.

With that being said, it is important to point out that the ONLY substance that the human body absorbed through the lining of the stomach is alcohol. So if you put a good amount of high concentration alcohol (AKA straight liquor with minimal chaser or other fluid) into the stomach in a short period of time, it will be absorbed relatively quickly and will hit you all at once. The body can process ~1 drink per hour on average (a little less in women and certain ethnicities). So if you take three shots back to back, wait 20 minutes or so and you will likely find yourself to have a nice buzz.

It is unwise (and potentially unsafe) to consume a large amount of alcohol in a very short period of time. So, whatever method you take, be sure to take a 20-30 minute break between spurts of quick drinking (especially if liquor). Without the break, you have only a vague idea of how drunk you will soon be. Vomiting is the typical response of a BAC that rises too quickly or get too high and stays too high. The Area Postrema of the brain essentially goes, "oh shit!" when it detects very high levels of alcohol and triggers the body to vomit, often with little warning.

I ran into this problem last year a few times and fixed it rather quickly. just do two shots of Bacardi 151, and your set. probably for the night.

dont try six shots though...that really hurts later on.

If you really think that's something you want to do then downing spirits as fast as possible - while trying not to throw up - is probably the fastest way; you'll catch up in minutes. If that's too much for you, drinking something less toxic, say beer, steadily can do the trick too. If you down an ounce or two of beer per minute (there's also a drinking game that involves doing this) you'll be doing fine after an hour. :-)

You could also start having some drinks along the way to the party. A friend of mine used to do that, since he had a half hour bus ride to the center; sometimes he'd even be more inebriated than the rest of the crew when he arrived.
