Hey guys, this is part of a work question and part of just personal use. I'm a writer for USC's paper, and I write the internet column. This week I'm writing about Google Buzz, and how it stacks up to other social media sites, as well as its overall merit for college students. I'm having a bit of trouble finding people on campus who use it for an opinion, but since you guys are tech savvy, I figured I'd ask you. What are the upsides to it? Flaws? Is it worth using?

I still haven't figured out what Wave does. I'm taking a break from Google's new mediocre privacy invading BETA that it releases every other week until they start making intuitive products again. |

I am giving buzz a chance, I think that if google continues to listen to user feedback, and improve the app, it could take some users from both twitter or facebook. I have an odd feeling that google is going to hope that buzz goes big, otherwise its going to buy a social network, they certainly have the money to do so. |

Personally, Google Buzz seems like a wannabe twitter. What's interesting is, I don't communicate with many of my peers through Gmail, so I only have about 9 followers. If anything, Google Buzz has changed the frequency in which I change my Gchat status, because what I make my status isn't what I necessarily want to be... "buzzing". Honestly, I'd be surprised if Buzz gains any popularity. Sure, Gmail is bomb and iGoogle is really cool too, but it looks like Buzz will fall flat on its face. |

I agree with that guy, the lack of contacts is a huge problem. My biggest beef is that it stuck these people's feeds in my Google Reader, and I can't find any way to turn off their comments from showing up in my feed. I use Google Reader for following blogs and news sources. I use Facebook and Twitter to follow people. I don't want to mix the two. |

It's an interesting idea. I think the biggest issue is that not everyone uses Google. Unlike FB or Twitter, you have to have a gmail account and so do your friends. I've been using Gmail since it was still in beta in late 04 and I still only have 4 friends that use gmail as well. I know many people that are vehemently opposed to anything Google due to their "privacy" policy. |
