I understand that we college students need to engage in efficient, productive, pro-active activities in order to not live in a box in our later years.

However, I am also part of the school of thought that everyone needs some down-time. My roommate finds herself on Tetris when she needs a mental break while I enjoy the occasional clip from Viral Video Film School.

For those of us who aren't robots and need a break, what do you do?

When I've got some downtime, I oil my joints... – Kelly Sutton Feb 20 at 19:33
I knew it. Your occasional beeping tipped me off. – Tessa Feb 22 at 6:43

I hang out in a few forums online - music forums mostly. Always nice to get to talk to people all over the world with such different views. Although its a good time-waster, we're all helping people out here on Discuss Campus.

If I really need to get away, I'll go for a walk or take a quick drive and take a short hike. The vast majority of trails these days are just not used. People just don't get out enough these days. They'd rather sit inside and immerse themselves with crap. Get outside and experience the real world people.

Also, I am a fan of Tetris, addictinggames.com, and if I have some time, playing RTS games like Rise of Nations. I am also an avid flight simulator fan. So, I have Microsoft Flight Simulator X and take a flight here and there.

Last, working out is something I make myself do a few times a week. I hit up the rec center and run a few laps. Also, I meet up a buddy and we play racquetball. An amazing sport that I highly recommend trying out. February is actually Racquetball month. So, give it a shot!

I apologise for the future hours that will be eaten up by this ridiculously awesome game. ^___^

I look at thinkgeek.com for laughs every now and then

Otherwise, I follow some motorcycle racing and generally make fun of my friends on facebook.

I play videogames that don't involve shooting or violence. Casual games help calm my nerves. Reading anything, from a magazine to a newspaper, can distract myself while also remaining informed. Also, youtube is a reliable time-waster.

Playing FPS games like Call of Duty ease my nerves so well. When I'm done writing a paper, nothing feels better than to play COD for a while. – Chad Feb 18 at 20:33
I'm the opposite-- FPS make me super tense. I play a lot of stupid flash games online though, and also a lot of PS3 games that don't have people who jump out and shoot you. (Personal preference, not a value judgment.) – Nora Feb 19 at 20:20

Videogames are a good time-waster. My roommates and I play Rock Band all the time, and it's great way to unwind, have some fun, and kill some time.

Youtube is also a classic one. The first week of the fall semester my roommates and I got to know each other by showing each other our favorite videos on Youtube.

It is a mental break, but not so much a physical one, but working out is always good. It kills time, gets you in shape, and helps to relieve stress. Get your iPod, hit the gym, and unwind.

I like to curl up and read a book. I just finished Coders at Work and now I'm reading through Founders at Work. My Amazon wish list is pretty big.

Most people also do this, but I consider going out to eat and to drink to be ways to relax.
